Penny Mart, West Tawakoni implementing dual axis commercial solar trackers

Renovations are currently in progress at Penny Mart in West Lake Tawakoni with the aim of revitalizing the shopping center and bringing it up to modern standards. The property has undergone a substantial transformation, including upgrades to the retail storefronts, parking lot, and lighting, as well as enhancements to the overall store experience and laundromat.

A noteworthy addition to the shopping center is the Mechatron 72 Kw dual-axis solar tracker, a state-of-the-art solar panel system being installed by SolartronTM, which serves as the centerpiece of the property. The solar system will provide continuous power for the shopping center by utilizing batteries to store excess solar generated electrical energy to be used at night when the sun has set. Penny Mart is not just a convenience store but also boasts a full laundromat with more than 50 washers and 50 dryers servicing the community. The store with more than 5 thousand square feet of goods provides patrons with last minute groceries and hardware that otherwise would require a long trip into Greenville or Terrell. The development of the solar system was the idea of the new owners, Adi Katika Reddy, and his partner Satish Siripuram, who are looking to improve the center and at the same time reduce the carbon footprint of the facilities. “We both had the idea that solar could provide all our electrical needs and be a symbol for the community that Tawakoni is beginning to thrive and grow again”. The downturn in commerce hit the Tawakoni and sounding area hard in 2020 as the Lake is the primary draw for visitors and vacationers from Dallas and other areas due to the trophy size striped bass and catfish the lake has to offer anglers. The partners are now considering a 2–4-megawatt community solar investment in the other 27 acres of property they own behind the shopping center. “This is just the first step toward investing in solar and drawing other businesses to our region”. The system will pay for itself in less than 3 years with the output of dual axis trackers and Federal Tax incentives (IRA). Dual axis trackers were our only consideration due to the more than 60% greater output of the system from the same panels. “Solartron has been great to work with for the entire project from ground clearing, engineering and commissioning.

This is the future and we both want to be part of something special for the environment and that provides a good return on investment”, said Adi.

"Penny Mart's Extensive Renovations Culminate in Cutting-Edge Solar Panel Installation”

Under new ownership, the shopping center is undergoing extensive renovations to modernize the property and bring it up to date. One of the centerpieces of this renovation is the installation of a new Mechatron 56 Kw dual axis solar tracker by SolartronTM a Dallas based certified solar installer and EPC.

The solar system will provide continuous power for the shopping center by utilizing batteries to store excess solar-generated electrical energy for use at night. In addition to being a convenience store, Penny Mart also houses a full laundromat with more than 50 washers and dryers that service the community. With over 20,000 square feet of goods, the store provides patrons with last-minute groceries and hardware that would otherwise require a long trip into Greenville or Terrell.

The idea for the solar system came from the new owners, Adi Katika Reddy, and his partner Satish Siripuram, who wanted to improve the business center and reduce its carbon footprint. The Penny Mart solar array, assuming 6 hours of sun each day for a year, could decrease carbon emissions by approximately 174,000 pounds of CO2 annually.

The Covid 19 downturn in commerce hit the Lake Tawakoni, Quilan, and surrounding areas hard in 2020 as lake recreation is the primary draw for visitors and vacationers from Dallas and other areas due to the trophy size striped bass and blue catfish the lake has to offer anglers.

The partners are now considering a 3–4-megawatt community solar investment on their adjoining 27 acres they own behind the shopping center.

“Solartron’s dual-axis solar trackers were the only consideration due to the more than 60% greater output of the system from the same panels. The system will pay for itself in less than 3 years with the enhanced energy output of dual-axis trackers and Federal Tax incentives (IRA). "This is just the first step toward investing in solar and drawing other businesses to our region," said Adi.

“The team at Solartron has been fantastic to work with, handling everything from ground clearing to engineering and commissioning”. Adi and Satish are excited about the potential of this solar investment and are looking forward to being part of something special for the environment while providing a good return on investment.

Overall, this project is an excellent example of how businesses can take the lead in environmental stewardship and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Penny Mart is not just a convenience store, but a beacon of hope for the community, demonstrating that Tawakoni is beginning to thrive and grow again.
