Using Solar
in Aquaculture
Open pond aquaculture has been the traditional farming method, but its use is greatly limited by environmental conditions and regulations. Indoor Aquaculture with water re-circulation offers many advantages:
- Environmental control
- Water conservation
- Protecting fish from predators
- Protecting fish from diseases carried by wild fish
However, re-circulation aquaculture has a high energy cost since the water must be kept in constant motion to supply oxygen and remove waste.
Re-circulation aquaculture normally uses centrifugal pumps, but air lift pumps can reduce energy costs by up to 35% in low-head systems, while also having lower upfront costs. Other than saving energy, an air lift pump performs useful functions like aeration, carbon dioxide removal, and foam fractionation.

Adapting solar energy can increase energy independence and minimizing the carbon footprint of the industry. Incorporating solar energy into re-circulation aquaculture systems can not only increase the efficiency of the method, but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
